Chapter 11

The next two days were completely uneventful. Elizabeth arose late in the morning. The maids had not pulled back her curtains, but they had lit her a fire and left clean water in her new basin, along with a clean chamberpot. She relieved herself, and set about the task of washing. She scrubbed her body, and applied the provided ointment for her legs, which were already looking greatly improved. Likewise, the worst of the cuts upon her heel had lost most of its angry redness overnight, though a bruise had formed. The apothecary had warned her that might happen and not to be alarmed.

After summoning the maid to help her dress, Elizabeth went downstairs to the dining room. Maria and Aunt Cass were already hard at work making lists of books and sorting accordingly. A light meal of rolls, cakes, tea, coffee, and chocolate was off to the side.

“Good morning, my dear. How are you feeling today?” Aunt Cass asked.

“I believe I am healing faster than expected,” Elizabeth said.

“Excellent news. Now, I hope you don’t mind, but Mrs. Thorne and I wished to get an early start this morning.”

“Henry has a bookseller coming to visit today, to make a potential purchase, so we wanted as many books available as possible.”

“Why didn’t you wake me?” Elizabeth asked. She glanced at the time. It was ten in the morning. “Goodness. I seemed to have overslept.”

“We wanted you to get your rest,” Aunt Cass said. “Oh, letters arrived for you. Sit and eat. We’ll keep working here.”
